I’ve always enjoyed Christmas but this year was especially fun! From the countdown boxes on the Advent calendar to the opening of presents on Christmas day, it was all SO enjoyable. This was a time for our family to create new traditions with Abby as well as share and carry on the Christmas traditions from our childhood.
Matt and I both enjoyed opening a gift on Christmas Eve, so that is something Abby did as well. Abby’s gift was new pajamas for Christmas morning and a book about baby Jesus. We also shared with her the experience of the Advent calendar. Just like with my Advent calendar when I was a child, some days had a special surprise! Of course, we know that Abby is too young to remember and appreciate these traditions, but this was her first Christmas and we wanted to make sure we did it right!
I have a beautiful nativity scene that I was not able to put up this year thanks to my little crawler, so instead I bought a plush nativity set so that I could still share with Abby the story of Baby Jesus and the true meaning of Christmas. She enjoyed the set, although she did try to eat the Holy Family on occasion 😉
We enjoyed “midnight” mass at our new church in Salem on Christmas Eve as well as dinner with the Miller clan that evening. Since there was no way a true midnight mass was going to happen with a 9 month old, we opted for the 3:30 family mass instead. It was fun seeing the children play out the story of Jesus’ birth. There were a couple of extra wisemen, shepherds, and angels so everyone could have a part 🙂
Christmas morning including both the Miller and Zeck clans. Everyone had their eyes on Abby and it was so much fun helping her to open her presents and to see her get excited over a new toy. Moms with older kids tell me that each year get more exciting and enjoyable and I believe it.
We all got a ton of wonderful gifts. I made photobooks for both sets of grandparents, and my mom made a photobook for me! Obviously, great minds think alike.
The day wound down with a nice dinner, some movies, and a couple of naps. I was sad to see the day end, but don’t think Christmas could have gone anymore perfectly.
